Schluchsee - Baden-Württemberg - Germany
Located at over 1,000 m above sea level in a high valley in the Black Forest, this 500-year-old former mill unites a sense of ease and comfort with outstanding cuisine. The unique charm of the establishment together with your hosts’ truly special brand of hospitality never fail to captivate.
Beyond the mountains… … allowing yourself simply to “be”, and leaving the outside world far behind!
Lying between the gently domed mountaintops of the Black Forest, surrounded by shrubs, roses and a large lawn for sunbathing, guests discover this magical Black Forest house. The stream, which once drove a mill wheel, flows past the terrace as it has done seemingly for an eternity, continuing across the meadows and down into the valley to the Schluchsee below.
A refuge in the Black Forest
Until the 18th century, this property was actually a grain mill belonging to the Benedictine abbey of St. Blasien, after which it became a typical Black Forest farmhouse with fields and a cattle farm. At the beginning of the 1960s, the farmhouse itself was remodeled into a hotel. On the structure that remains preserved to this day, we can still recognize indications of the former use of various areas.
Behind the wooden facade of the over 500-year-old house, we find a romantic world in which the traditional building style and modern comforts are perfectly united. The carefully selected materials, furniture, fabrics, cushions and pictures in the rooms blend to create a single harmonious whole and an atmosphere that is truly special, one in which you feel completely at ease from the very first moment on.
The living spaces of the former farm invite you to while away moments of glorious relaxation, while at the same time enjoying the pleasant company of your fellow guests. The old farmhouse parlor, with its well-stocked library, the Oven Room with its unique tiled stove and the Old Kitchen, now a lounge, offer a cozy setting in which to spend a little time, especially if the weather isn’t being particularly kind to hikers.
The Bathing Room is a truly unique spot. Here, in the big sauna, under the wellness shower and in the comfy relaxation room in a typical chateau-style, you will find the relaxation and regeneration you seek. And if that is still not sufficient in order to escape the daily routine, the soothing hands of our expert massage therapists are certain to do the trick.
“Seasonal – Creative – Regional”
The farm’s former cow barn today houses the restaurant. Here, owner Rolf Pochert creates a new menu every day that reflects a true love for his art. In keeping with the time of year and the availability of seasonal products, he successfully manages to unite regional cooking with French, Mediterranean or Asian influences, to create fascinating compositions. The culinary selection is enhanced by an extensive wine list, one that offers wines from regional vintners as well as those from other interesting wine-growing areas. Your hostess selects and serves these vintages with expertise and enthusiasm.
In the countryside surrounding this refuge, you are greeted by landscapes rich in variety, including virgin forest, gentle hills, verdant meadows, cheerful streams, as well as the biggest swimming lake in the Black Forest. Historical towns and villages are simply waiting to be explored. Beginning directly behind the mill are marked hiking paths, Nordic-walking and mountain-bike trails, as there are cross-country ski trails in winter. With dedication and boundless good taste, your married hosts, Katja Nowak & Rolf Pochert, have created a true refuge in just a few years, a feeling you often only sense at other establishments over the course of several generations. Both of them take care of their guests in a pleasant, family-style atmosphere that makes it easy to unwind away from the daily grind, and that invites you to return time and again.
