The Winery
Winery Winkler-Hermaden wine estate lies in the southeast of Styria in the heart of the Styrian Vulkanland region, just a few minutes from the Slovenian and Hungarian border. 21 different varieties grow on an area totalling 100 hectares cultivated by the Winkler-Hermaden family (forest, farmland, meadows, orchards and vineyards): One focus is the wine production of Sauvignon blanc and “Burgunder varieties” (Morillon, Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder), the other – unusual for Styria – is red wines (Blauer Zweigelt, Pinot noir, Cabernet sauvignon, Merlot and St. Laurent). Finishing touches to their selection are provided by Welschriesling, the most famous Styrian grape, and, as a true specialty of the volcanic soil, Traminers and Gewürztraminers (mostly in the Prädikatswein category).

Best red and white wines
Beneath the old, high 18th-cent. vaulted ceilings, we discover traditional wooden barrels as well as a series of barriques and stainless-steel tanks. The best red wines, but also select whites have been developed in barriques for a number of years. The wood from which the small oak barrels are made comes from their own forest on the Kapfensteiner Kogel.
Own farm
In the 350-year-old "Long Cellar" beneath cross-vaulted ceilings, the red wine is now stored in small oak barrels. The estate’s own farm produces a selection of other products, offered here in refined form: from various fruit juices to vinegars and a collection of distilled spirits.
