Winery FJ Gritsch Mauritiushof
Spitz - Lower Austria - Austria
The wines of Vinery Mauritiushof are synonymous with the unique soil and microclimate of each individual vinyard. These special qualities yield great wines that are based not only on the traditional craftsmanship, but also on the unique philosophie of the Gritsch family.
Wachau Winery FJ GRITSCH Mauritiushof
Actually built back in the 13th century as a grape collection station for Niederaltaich Abbey in Bavaria, the Mauritiushof – which stands on the peaceful church square in Spitz (in the Wachau region) – has undergone exemplary restoration work. Looking back as it does on a rich history, the property – which features an inner courtyard with arcaded walkways, vaulted cellars and more – came into the possession of the Gritsch family in 1799. Franz-Josef and Maria Theresia Gritsch are a young couple, representing the 7th generation of their family to run this establishment.
The vintner is one of the region’s very best. His “kalmuck” wines unite the tradition and modernity of the Wachau; His Rieslings and Grüner Veltliners grow in top vineyards, including Dürnsteiner Burg, Singerriedel, 1000-Eimerberg and Loibenberg, and are always highly rated by the critics. The four holiday apartments are modern with a friendly decor and afford views that are utterly magical.
