Young artists design entrance area at Hotel Altstadt Vienna
Since April 2014 you can truly sense as you step into Hotel Altstadt Vienna that you have happened into the hotel of a true art lover. Owner, Otto E. Wiesenthal, has once again expressed his interest in young art, commissioning agency BLK RIVER to give the entrance area a whole new face.
The agency invited Austrian painter Alexander Ruthner and Russian art collective ZUK CLUB to create a new look for what had previously been plain white walls. The bold dynamism of Ruthner’s grass paintings and the baroque opulence of a broad floral mural by the ZUK CLUB, in combination with modern lighting design, have created an unmistakable flair that enthralls each and every visitor.
The stated goal was more than achieved: The atmosphere of the room was transformed from stairway to reception hall, one which radiates warmth, establishes an art context, and at the same time provides orientation for the guest. In the first room guests are greeted by panels in a lush green. Only after a second look do you discover breaks in the idyllic landscapes, such as cigarette stubs or dead parakeets.
In contrast, the work of the Russian art collective is kitschy, yet with a modern interpretation as colors are transformed into their negatives. The stripes immediately create a connection to the centerpiece of the hotel, the Red Salon, leading along the wall to the elevators and in the direction of the reception.
