Trencin - Slovakia
The historic 4-star Castle Hotel Elizabeth, a jewel of the Jugendstil era, was built in 1901 by Baron Armin Popper in Trencin, a town rich in history nestled in the Western Slovakia. Today, this carefully renovated, 100-year-old building offers upscale comforts for discerning business and wellness guests.
The hotel’s history: “Gründerzeit” and Historicism in Trencin
The town of Trencin is in the west of Slovakia on the central section of the Váh river at the foot of the White Carpathians. In the heart of this town, directly below the castle mountain, Hungarian nobleman Baron Armin Herman Popper von Podhrágy had a luxurious hotel establishment built in 1901. Erected on the site of the old town guesthouse “U cervenej hviezdy” (“To the Red Star”), a hotel was born in the historicist style typical of this era, featuring ornamental elements of the Baroque as well as the up-and-coming Jugendstil.
Popper named the hotel in honour of Elisabeth, the wife of Emperor Franz Josef II, “Erszebet Szalo”, after whom the hotel’s own Café Sissi is also named. Immediately after its opening on 1 January 1902, the first hotel on the square became a central element of cultural and society life in the town of Trencin. In 1919, the Tatra Bank took ownership of the building, running it as Hotel Tatra from 1921 on.
