Bedizzole (BS) - Lombardei - Italy / South Tyrol
This house unites the charm and exclusive atmosphere of the past with the techniques of bio-compatible restoration and the very latest renewable-energy technologies.
Agriturismo L’Unicorno lies in Valtenesi, surrounded by vineyards, organic fruit trees and olive groves amid three hectares of land with a rich cultural as well as natural history. The old palazzo from the year 1654 is the oldest house in the small farming village of Macesìna, in the province of Brescia in Western Lombardy, just a few minutes from Lake Garda.
Step by step, the original building acquired a Lombardic courtyard and, in 1777, a gallery suffused with natural light, featuring a colonnade made of local Botticino white marble, completed in 1779 with a mansard. The old stables, the barn and the cellar, along with the residential wing occupied by the noble family itself, underwent gentle renovations with the goal of preserving the charm of the older structures, while also restoring the original splendor of the building. Heat pumps, photovoltaic panels as well as a solar thermal-electric system minimize CO2 emissions, helping your hosts to achieve their goals of offering you a rejuvenating, healthy hideaway surrounded by nature.
The Wine Cellar
The old, cool cellar, which originated back in the 16th century and features characteristic barrel-vaulted ceilings and stone walls, emits air that carries the fragrance of fermenting cider. Here, you can taste wines that have been produced in-house with boundless dedication and care. They are made from the queen of grapes in the Lake Garda/Brescia region, the “Groppello”, its name deriving from the special shape of the grape: dense and compact like a knot, that is to say a “groppo”, as it is called by the locals. Your hosts recommend tasting the wine accompanied by delectable samples of sausages and cheeses from the green Alpine valleys of Valcamonica, Valtrompia and Valsabbia, as well as the upper reaches of Lake Garda.
Locanda della Chiocciola
The hotel’s restaurant is found in ground-floor rooms amid vaulted ceilings and charming frescoes, looking out on the colonnade of the green inner courtyard. In its warm atmosphere, you will be able to enjoy traditional dishes of the region, prepared innovatively with fresh ingredients from the vegetable garden as well as fine herbs. The exquisite extra vergine olive oil was pressed from their own Lake Garda olives …

Next to the entrance, you will find the room occupied by “Caffè 900”. Its striking art nouveau atmosphere transports guests back to the bustling époque at the beginning of the last century that promised to bring such big changes. Here, you can partake in a fresh aperitif of the house or enjoy a fragrant espresso, small but strong – true to the oldest Italian tradition – or you may wish to allow yourself a small glass of full-flavored Grappa di Monovitigno, distilled from the marc of Groppello grapes…
