Hotelier of the Year 2019

All the members of Schlosshotels & Herrenhäuser gather annually to participate in the general assembly and to award the title “Hotelier of the Year”. From the more than 80 international hotel and  restaurant owners, this year it was Otto E. Wiesenthal, owner of Altstadt Hotel Vienna, who was selected as “Hotelier of the Year 2019”.

“Otto Wiesenthal is an extraordinary person. In fact, I know of no other who has made a lateral career move into the hospitality business and earned acclaim as a hotelier spanning decades. His passion for art and interior design as well as his untiring wish to surprise his guests time and again, release a flow of creative forces from within him that are beyond compare.” explains Max Eidlhuber, President of Schlosshotels & Herrenhäuser.

Living space for creative spirits, unique rooms & a good place to work

Back in 1902, this house in the 7th district of Vienna was built as a mansion for an industrialist of the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy. Later it was used as a guesthouse, the “Pension Bellaria” – until Mr. Wiesenthal finally discovered the unoccupied building in 1991. After having spent so much of his life on the road due to work, he had finally grown tired of all the impersonal hotels and instead decided to fulfill his personal dream of launching a hotel business of his very own. Starting with 24 rooms, he managed to create a residence that would house his private art collection and simultaneously provide guests with a home away from home.

Thanks to his close ties to the art scene, he managed to establish a gathering place for artists, actors and creative people in this building constructed during the “Gründerzeit” period. In the course of the last several years, many famous architects and artists have designed many of the 58 hotel rooms and suites. Naturally, with a focus on creativity as well as skilled craftsmanship and top-quality materials.

“I wish to thank Schlosshotels & Herrenhäuser and especially my staff. They are responsible for a huge amount of the success of our hotel. For me, the Altstadt Vienna is also a place where the employees should feel comfortable. If they get joy out of their work, then our guests will also be happy – and that’s also good for the business!” says Mr. Wiesenthal.
