Winkler-Hermaden family, Castle Host of the Year 2013
Castle Hotels & Mansions has crowned its “Castle Host of the Year 2013”, with this year’s coveted title going to Styria and the Winkler-Hermaden family at Schloss Kapfenstein.
International recognition for the Winkler-Hermaden family, the hosts of Schloss Kapfenstein (Styria): The “Castle Hotels & Mansions” association, with around 80 member businesses in Austria, Bavaria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia and Italy, honoured Margot and Georg Winkler-Hermaden with the coveted title of “Castle Host of the Year”.
“Our intent is for Schloss Kapfenstein to be a place of ease and wellbeing, a place where guests love to while away the days”, this is how Margot Winkler-Hermaden, our fledgling “Castle Host of the Year 2013”, simply and pointedly describes her philosophy. Margot and Georg Winkler-Hermaden run imposing Schloss Kapfenstein, a romantic knight’s castle dating back to the 11th century, built on an extinct volcanic cone in the heart of Styria’s “Volcano Land”.
After a colourful history spanning over 1,000 years, Schloss Kapfenstein and its estate have been the property of the Winkler-Hermaden family since 1918. Young-and-in-love honeymooners and gourmets of all ages stay in historical guest rooms with stylishly rustic furnishings. In the restaurant and out on the castle terraces with enchanting panoramas of the surrounding wine country, they enjoy an array of mouth-watering Styrian treats such as cream of pumpkin soup, young Styrian beef, or famous Kapfenstein pumpkinseed dumplings served on elderberry sauce.
Your hosts serve these dishes accompanied by wines from their own family winery: The slopes of the extinct volcanic cone provide us with some of the best vineyards in Styria. Particularly well-known is the “Olivin” Zweigelt, named for the green crystalline stone found in the volcanic rock, generally held to be Styria’s premier red wine and one of the best drops to be had in all of Austria.
“In honouring the Winkler-Hermaden family, we have chosen people who have made it their life’s mission to allow their guests to experience to the full an estate with a thousand-year history”, explains Max Eidlhuber, President of Castle Hotels & Mansions. “When seen in its totality, it represents a complete work of art, one which deserves the highest recognition and distinction”, praises Eidlhuber. The award was presented during the Castle Hotels & Mansions general assembly held at Hotel Schloss Weikersdorf in Baden close to Vienna.
“Stay in individually run hideaways with a rich history” – it was in keeping with this motto that, now almost 50 years ago, the “Castle Hotels & Mansions” association was born, now counting some 80 historical properties in Austria and neighbouring countries amongst its membership. The hosts of Castle Hotels & Mansions see themselves as heirs to a deeply rooted historical legacy and, through their efforts to preserve the originality of their buildings, make a valuable contribution to quality in tourism.
