Wine Estate Winkler-Hermaden

The winery of Winkler-Hermaden estate is located in south-eastern Styria in the very heart of a thermal spa region, only few kilometers from the Slovenian and Hungarian borders. The vineyards of the winery are planted on the steep slopes of a volcanic cone. The castle winery on top of the mountain has been family owend and operated since 1898.

Thirteeen different grape varieties thrive on 34 hectares. Sauvignon Blanc and the Burgundian grapes like Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Morillon (the Styrian name for Chardonnay) receive special attention here.

Rather unusual for Styria, but surprisingly successful, are the red wines from Pinot Noir, Blauer Zweigelt, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. To round out the assortment, the winery also offers Welschriesling, the most familiar Styrian grape variety, and Traminer – a specialty particularly successful on volcanic soil, usually made in the Prädikat category.

Georg Winkler-Hermaden aims for the typical character of each grape variety. By connecting the ancient “Löwenkeller” with the “Drachenkeller”, he combined tradition with modern technology. The beautiful vaults from the 18th century house both traditional wooden casks and rows of small custom-made oak barrels. Fermentation of the wines will be done generally in stainless steel tanks, while the reds are traditionally put in oak fermentation vats with the necessary equipment for temperature-controlled fermentation.

The best reds and selected whites are aged in small barrels of oak sourced from Winkler-Hermaden’s own woods. They are stored in a 350-year-old cross-vaulted cellar that is 60 meters long. During a visit of this interesting winery, other products like sparkling wines, spirits or vinegar may be tasted as well.
