It is not unusual to make a post office out of an old palace, however, it is quite remarkable that an attractive palace hotel should develop out of an old post office. And this particular post office in Imst has even been sung about in a world-famous operetta by Carl Zeller, “Der Vogelhändler” (“The Birdseller”)!  Which makes sense, since this was once the bird-trade metropolis of Europe.
And as you sit out on the hotel’s beautiful terrace to enjoy an outstanding lunch or dinner, with the breathtaking panoramas of the Ötztal Alps constantly before your eyes, yet another and equally famous melody from Zeller’s operetta might well come to mind: “Roses from Tyrol …”
In short: If you have managed to keep some romance in your heart (and which guest of a castle hotel has not?), then here, in the verdant centre of this small and quite delightful Inntal town, you are certain to discover a level of bliss that will be quite to your taste. And while we are speaking of “taste”, even the cooking here at the old post office in Imst is quite legendary.
Schloss Sprengenstein, an estate from the fifteenth century, provides a virtually idyllic ambiance for earthly pleasures of every kind, with nary a single detail overlooked, from the castle oriel with its onion tower, to the wooden window shutters in red-white-red. The building’s interior looks less like a post office then it does a luxurious aristocratic abode, boasting stylish Biedermeier furnishings and valuable antiques.
And if, over the course of the centuries, Imst has earned the honorary title of the “Merano of the North”, this is owed in no small degree to wonderful Schloss Sprengenstein standing at its very heart.
