If you are not only looking for snow-covered slopes at 2020 metres, but also want to meet a real ancestor of Emperor Franz Joseph, then you'll definitely want to visit the Sellraintal of Tyrol. Anyone who thinks they have to make a pilgrimage to the Vienna Hofburg or Schönbrunn Palace in order to walk in the footsteps of the Habsburgs, is very much mistaken. In the beautiful mountain world of the Sellraintal, Christian Count Stolberg-Stolberg resides on his regal estate at 2020 metres above sea level. And he is no less than the real-life great-great-grandchild of Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth of Austria. But do not fear, the lord of this castle is far from being an other-worldly apparition. In fact, here at the Jagdschloss Kühtai, you might run across him anywhere, perhaps enjoying a convivial chat with guests in the “pine rooms”, in the bar, the wine cellar, or out on the sunny terrace: Count Stolberg’s highly personal brand of hotel management is virtually indescribable, it is something you simply have to experience for yourself. The House of Habsburg is omnipresent in these ancient walls, whose foundations were laid in the year 1280. There is not a single apartment, or room, or corridor, where you will not find – in addition to all kinds of antiques – valuable copperplate engravings, family trees and portraits from the owner’s ancestral gallery. In 1952, the then hunting lodge was transformed into today’s “Jagdschloss Kühtai” – a winter sports hotel, rich in tradition and boasting all the comforts, with a truly aristocratic soul. A unique winter paradise – alpine and cross-country skiers are drawn especially by having direct access to the slopes and trails, while ski-tourers also find exactly what they are looking for in one of the most famous and most beautiful touring areas in all of Tyrol. Enjoy imperial hospitality at over 2000 m above sea level!
