Special Features: Schloss Rosenau is the focal point of a former, and still virtually untouched estate complex. The castle, built in renaissance style in 1593, acquired its baroque character in the 18th century under Leopold Christoph Count Schallenberg, the founder of a freemason lodge. There is evidence that W.A. Mozart took a circuitous route on his way to Prague, purely in order to spend the night at Schloss Rosenau. In 1974, after having unravelled Rincolin's symbolic frescoes in the main vestibule, historians came to the opinion that the regally appointed rooms of the south wing were those of a freemasons' lodge. Thereupon, the Grand Lodge of Austria decided to establish a Museum of Freemasonry at this site. Since that time, it has regularly hosted special exhibitions, while its rite rooms continue to be used for meetings of Austrian and international lodges. Located on the 2nd floor of the castle is the hotel itself, magnificently appointed with antiques and oriental carpets. Culture lovers, romantics and bridal couples are all sincerely welcome.
