In 1848 young mining industrialist, Julius Emanuel Wodley, took over his parents' operation with its furnaces and a highly modern hammer mill, located on the Gössering in Grünburg near Hermagor. He had Schloss Lerchenhof constructed for his impending marriage. However, he died at an early age, leaving his young bride behind as his sole heir.

In earlier times, larks had once nested and warbled away on this beautiful plateau at the entrance to the Gitschtal Valley, but with the increasing mining activity, they gradually withdrew to quieter areas.
It was these creatures after which Woodley named his residence. Not until 1880 did the estate come into the possession of the Steinwender Family through marriage, a neighbouring family with a very proud farming tradition.

The spacious lands which surround the palace have remained preserved and form today's foundation for the affiliated farm, which today supplies the hotel and restaurant with products of exceptionally good quality. Through its fascinating location amid the mountain world of the Carnic and Gailtal Alps, together with the culturally attractive Three-Countries Region of Carinthia - Friuli - Slovenia, the palace is able to offer a very special setting for vacation-seekers and those guests who are merely travelling through.

20 comfortable rooms provide space for a pleasant, individualised and relaxed stay. In an especially family-style atmosphere and with the same love from the original romantic tale of the building's founders still tangibly exuded by the building's old walls, guests of this palace can look forward to a true pampering, to an exceptional lifestyle of ease and comfort.

The especially beautiful location of our estate - close to, and with exceptional views of the Gailtal and Carnic Alps - makes it possible for our guests to undertake hikes, both leisurely and challenging, right from the front door of the palace. Our proximity to Italy and Slovenia makes us a much-coveted base for excursions by car or motorbike.
Hiking maps and tour descriptions are all available at the hotel. And you should definitely not miss out on a tour of the farm led personally by the owner of the palace himself!

In Winter:

We are located in the midst of Carinthia's biggest ski area, the Nassfeld. The free ski bus stops right in front of the palace. Enjoy the convenience of obtaining your ski pass right here at the hotel, while you can store your skis and boots right by the lifts. The floodlit natural toboggan run is in front of the palace, while the two cross-country ski trails begin right outside our front door.
