Where better to reside than between the waters! In this old palace brewery, set on a small peninsular on Lake Mattsee, people have been lauding the indulgent side of life for many centuries. The days in which the Salzburg bishops imposed a tavern monopoly on their subjects are long past. Those who visit the former “Hoftafern” dating from 1398, nowadays known as the “Schlossbräu” and idyllically situated on the shore of the Mattsee, do so at their own free will – and with good reasons. One of which is Mrs. Iglhauser’s award-winning gourmet cuisine, incorporating fish from her own fish pond, local natural products and home-grown herbs, which she loves to incorporate into historic recipes in keeping with the Salzburg “kitchen garden” tradition. Yet another reason to travel to the Mattsee is the fine collection of wines stored away in the cellars, justifiably famous far and wide, and carefully managed by the owner, Jakob Iglhauser, an innkeeper who embodies the very best of the old Salzburg traditions. That traditional, cosy and fleet-footed flavour is also reflected in the décor of the rooms and suites. As you stay between the massive medieval walls of this (former) palace brewery, whose foundations go back to the “Frohnhaus” originally constructed here in the year 1200, you cannot fail to feel a clear sense of confidence and security. On the other hand, however, the castle’s owners have invested an abundance of charm and good taste in managing to create a hotel where guests feel ultimately comfortable and at ease. In the Princes’ Suites, prominent international personalities attending the summer festival feel as much at home, as do the numerous top managers who host seminars here. An atmosphere of comfort and ease, warmth and hospitality, good spirits and fabulous cuisine – the recipe for the success of the “Iglhauser´s” clear involves a pinch of each and every one of these ingredients.
